In de muziek van Fant de Kanter is het onmogelijk één bepaalde dominante invloed vast te stellen.
Veel van zijn werken worden weliswaar gekenmerkt door bijvoorbeeld een klassieke structuur, maar een onmiskenbare
liefde voor popmuziek is minstens zo sterk aanwezig. Bestaande muziekstromingen en avant-gardistische technieken dienen hem
als middel om een muzikale gedachte vorm te geven; zij zijn nooit een doel op zich. Muziek dient te ontstaan uit de gedachte
áán muziek: het zogenaamde "intuïtief componeren". Alhoewel zijn muziek niet programmatisch is, verraden zijn titels vaak een
buitenmuzikale inspiratiebron. Toch is zijn idee van muziek dat het als te ondergane emotie op zichzelf dient te staan, juist ook in combinatie met tekst en/of beeld.
De luisteraar zou niet gebonden mogen zijn aan hetgeen de componist voor ogen stond; de scheppingsemotie hoeft niet
gelijk te zijn aan de luisteremotie.
It is quite impossible to define a dominant influence in the music of Fant de Kanter. A lot of his work is indeed characterized by,
for example, classical structures, but an unmistakable love for pop music is at least equally noticeable.
Tradition aswell as avant-garde techniques serve as a means to shape a musical thought, without themselves ever becoming the goal.
Music has to be created out of musical thought; in the composer's own words: "intuitive composing".
Although De Kanter's music is not program music, his titles often reveal an inspiration source that is extra-musical. Nevertheless,
his opinion about music is that it should be independent as emotion to undergo, especially together with words and/or image.
The listener should not be bound by what the composer had in mind at the moment of creation.
The emotion of creating doesn't have to be the same as the emotion of listening.
