“The way I write music is stipulated by an infinite variety of influences. Thus I experience music as a single entity, completely free of shackles called genre. And since music is by far the greatest inspiration to create music, there’re only two kinds of music: one is the good kind, the rest is the other kind. (Duke Ellington)
Composing music is a meticulous search through the infinite shapes of sound. Finding atmosphere, meaning, form and structure within a required theme is the game to play. Point by point. It’s both the hardest part, as well as the primal force why I obeyed that inclination in the first place; to make something that elated myself.
As a composer, I lack any desire to aim for a collective experience. This provides me the required freedom in writing just what I want to hear myself, without any concern about audiences.
Setting text to music is slightly different, for music has to serve the words. And by serving I don’t mean submissive facilitation. Sometimes text needs a reply, or asks for firm contrast, or even pines for plain rebellion. But the music is always there to reinforce the story, whether it’s a poem or a libretto.
But after all, intuition rules everything. By far the biggest challenge is knowing before considering if something is right. This is the interconnection with my soul, and this cord has to be as short as possible, almost like a synthesis. In that state, composing transcends thoughts or feelings. It becomes an instinct.
All compositions in this catalogue made possible by commission, so somebody actually wanting my music. This is a tremendous privilege for which I’m very grateful.”
